Samsung Odyssey Mixed Reality Headset

Posted on October 10, 2017

It's been an exciting year for VR headsets and new developments. We've already talked about the upcoming release Dell's Mixed Reality Visor and now Samsung raises the bar with the Odyessy.
While companies like Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo have all unveiled their own headsets, the new Samsung Odyssey looks to be an improvement over others headsets in the same price range. On paper the Odyssey has an advantage thanks to a dual-OLED display setup. The resolution is higher than competing headsets and it has an impressive field-of-view at 110 degrees.

On Par with Oculus and VIVE?
As mentioned above, the Samsung Odyssey's dual-OLED display will feature a greater resolution that what you'll see with the Dell Visor or other comparable headsets. Each display features a resolution of 1400X1600 compared to the standard 1400X1400 you see with others. This alone puts the Odyssey more on par with the VIVE or Oculus but there are other similarities.

The Samsung Odyssey headset features integrated headphones and an IPD adjustment like the Oculus Rift so you can enjoy a more user-friendly and adjustable experience. The motion controllers are based on MS designs and will function like Oculus Touch or Dell Visor controls. Like the Dell Visor, the Odyssey kicks Lighthouses or external sensors to the curb as the Headset itself keeps track of the controller position. You'll still be tethered to your PC with the new Samsung headset but we're getting closer to accessible standalone headsets all the time.

Shut Up and Take My Money
To compete with the Dell Visor, Samsung is making the Odyssey available for November 6th. The timing is directly tied to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update happening October 17. Initial pricing will be the same as the Oculus and you can get your own headset and controller bundle for $499 USD.

The Odyssey and VR PornGiven the increased field-of-view and the improved resolution, the Odyssey could really make VR porn "pop". The Samsung Odyssey might just be the headset of choice for enjoying virtual naked ladies. Only time will tell.
