If you routinely dive into VR, you're probably using your smartphone or a premium PC option like an Oculus Rift or HTC VIVE. Things are about to change if Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg has anything to say about it. Enter the Oculus Go.
Last week, it was announced that by early 2018 we'll see a new standalone headset option from Oculus and at a more affordable price. With a projected price tag of $200 USD, the Oculus Go might just be the headset that brings more VR enthusiasts into the fold. This will be roughly half the price of other premium VR options that typically tether to your PC.
The SpecsThe Oculus Go will feature some interesting updates and this is aside from the obvious freedom from being connected to a PC. First off, The Oculus Go will have a display resolution of 2560X1440 that utilizes a fast-switch LCD system. Hugo Barra of Oculus states that this new fast-switch function improves clarity and reduces lag and latency issues.
As with the Oculus Rift, the Oculus Go will feature integrated audio so you won't need to provide your own earphones like you have with the Gear VR. This being said, you'll have the option for richer sound with a 3.5mm audio jack.
As for controls, Zuckerberg has already hinted at newly designed positionally tracked controllers that feature 6 degrees of motion. In terms of control, this will put the Oculus Go on the same level as the new Dell Visor and Samsung Odyssey headsets already announced.
Oculus Go and VR PornThere are more than a few skeptics when it comes to the Oculus Go. Many are concerned that the headset won't be able to successfully play many core Oculus apps, but for VR and 360 degree video this headset should really fly! We are really looking forward to the increased clarity and accessibility promised with the Oculus Go. The engineering behind the Oculus Go makes it a superb candidate for VR social platforms and streaming or live VR video. Facebook's interest in the project is obvious.
Go, Go Gadget Oculus!
